Leonardo in Patagonia and the Patagonian Golden Hexagon Challenge
Mathematics Awareness Day - 17 June

This project aims to increase the awareness of the role of mathematics in the community and in nature and art. It follows from the success of the MAGIC PENNYapproach to the learning of magnetism. This last method depended on the fact that the one and two penny British coins are magnetic. Unfortunately, Argentinan coins, like most of the coins of other countries in the world, are not magnetic and British coins are not easily available.

However, in July thanks to the Magic Penny Trust, the HSBC bank and the Royal Mint, 10000 one penny coins dated 2000 were flown from London to Patagonia for use in education. An exciting new stimulus to the appreciation of mathematics, which uses any sorts of round coins or objects, is being developed in association with Provincial School 168 in Puerto Madryn and Provincial School 15 in Paso de Indios. The day of June 17 (day 168 of the year and 169 in a leap year) , has been designated "Mathematics Awareness Day". MORE INFORMATION

Perito Moreno and Patagonia - Exhibition in Puerto Madryn and in Scotland

The successful exhibition “Perito Moreno and Patagonia 100 years on”, held in Buenos Aires and in Bariloche, in 1999, and supported by the HSBC bank, was restaged in Puerto Madryn in August and opened in Edinburgh in November. The exhibition is again organised in collaboration with the Centro Cultural Borges and the newspaper La Nacion. It is being presented in Edinburgh, in association with the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (Director Dr David Munro).

The exhibition includes photographs taken on Moreno´s expeditions in Patagonia, and contemporary photographs in the same places taken by Germán Sopeña. Documents also displayed from the Museo de la Patagonia Bariloche recording the part played by Moreno in assisting the Scottish Antarctic Expedition 100 years ago have already attracted considerable interest.

The Edinburgh venue is the prestigious exhibition hall of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the exhibition area is decorated with plants from Patagonia. - top

HMS Swift, Puerto Deseado - Exhibition in Buenos Aires

In 1770 the British warship HMS Swift sank in the harbour of Puerto Deseado, Santa Cruz, Patagonia. An exhibition, at the Centro Cultural Borges, Buenos Aires, edited by María Isabel Sanguinetti and Dr Dolores Elkin, Director and Scientific Director, respectively, of the underwater archeological investigation of the ship, is in course of preparation.
